The University of Waterloo Art Gallery (UWAG) delivers an opportunity to experience contemporary art and curatorial practices first-hand. Our program focuses on presenting challenging and engaging visual art by significant emerging and mid-career Canadian artists working in multidisciplinary media, while also providing professional content for research by undergraduate students at the University of Waterloo. The gallery maintains a permanent collection of over 600 works of art, and collaborates with UW Fine Arts and other like-minded cultural organizations to facilitate meaningful arts-based programs and events that enhance the cultural life on campus and throughout Waterloo Region.
UWAG plays a critical role facilitating exhibitions by emerging and mid-career artists, and connecting artists with ties to Waterloo Region alongside their counterparts in the Greater Toronto Area and across Canada. Our forward reaching curatorial program provides a platform for high impact multidisciplinary exhibitions in a supportive, professional and academic context.
UWAG is one of the only arts organizations in Kitchener-Waterloo with an exhibitions program dedicated to cutting edge contemporary art and visual media culture. Over the last six years, the gallery has hosted exhibitions by up-and-coming artists from across the region, and premiered projects by award winning Canadian artists working abroad. Although nested within the University of Waterloo and sharing East Campus Hall facilities with Fine Arts, UWAG is an independent organizational unit with its own mission appealing to both a supportive campus and a wider audience for arts and culture across the region.
UWAG’s funding is provided by the University of Waterloo and supplemented by project grants. Individual or corporate donations will be designated towards expanding on existing programming initiatives and facilitating needed staffing for outreach initiatives and projects that extend beyond the scope of our core funding.
