Spiritual Heritage Education Network Inc. (SHEN) exists for one single purpose of bridging the hearts and minds of people through education in Unity in Diversity. Thus, our goal is to promote a unified world-view. Diversity is obvious, but unity is not easily seen. As a result, human family is split into strong groups of “us” versus “them” and Unity in Diversity remains a mere catchphrase. SHEN proposes to highlight it through education in such a way that it shines through our surficial differences. Thus, our stated mission is:
To provide educational access to the thinking and findings of those enlightened beings (prophets, sages, philosophers, scientists and seers), who have spent their lives studying the nature of humankind and its relationship in the universe.
Our prophets, sages, philosophers, and seers used critical thinking to arrive at one uncaused cause of the universe and all it contains. Likewise, our scientists arrive at energy as the final cause of all matter. It is through this final material cause that we are all unified in our diversity means a lot to thinking and feeling human beings.
Stress-Free Community Program
We met Joe* in a health care setting. Joe was in a group of clients who wanted to kick their substance addictions. We were there to offer a workshop in deep breathing to reduce stress. Joe experienced the calm resulting from deep breathing. He also tried the bio-feedback system we used to demonstrate its effect.
“I was convinced it could help me get out of this trap I was in for 25 years. I seriously started to build my practice to 20 minutes twice a day. It took me eight months to become totally dry,” Joe said. “Not only that, I also kicked my habit of smoking three packs a day. My blood pressure was kidney threatening 200. Now it is normal.”
Joe now volunteers, giving back to the community by sharing his story with others.
Our organization has been around for 15 years. We started giving deep-breathing workshops nine years ago. Deep-breathing is not only for problems; it’s true value lies in prevention. It keeps bodies healthy, minds calm and thoughtful in learning and behaviour. Thoughtful individuals make healthy, strong, harmonious and vibrant communities to which we want to belong.
Life is one breath after another. Life is also responding to one thing after another. Our response defines our behaviour. Most of us do not know how to attend to the quality of our breath. Nor do we know how the quality of breath is related with our behaviour. Our Stress-Free Community Program teaches how to attend to the quality of our breath. Quality breathing promotes quality behaviour. This program consists of a course of four weekly workshops offered on a pay-it-forward basis. Someone donated to enable you to take these workshops. At the end of the course, you consider the value of what you learned and donate according to your pocketbook to enable someone else in the future.
“When I met you guys, I could hardly walk ten feet. Now I can walk a mile,” said Joe.

- Volunteering 16 hours to receive our instructor training enables you to become a workshop leader in our Stress-Free Community Program.
- Volunteering 8 hours to receive our communications training enables you to become a community worker to raise awareness about our Stress-Free Community Program.
- A $100 donation covers our cost to offer our Stress-Free Community workshops to two members of our community who in turn touch the lives of their families, friends and coworkers with their calm demeanor.
- Our Stress-Free Community Program helps participants maintain physical and mental health, increase attention, focus and learning ability, and develop thoughtful and integrative behaviour.
Our Stress-Free Community Program offers opportunities for funding and volunteering to create a cadre of volunteer and paid instructors trained to offer quality deep breathing workshops in various neighbourhoods of Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph. Instructors will work in teams of two equipped with a computer, an emWave heart rate monitor, a projector and a screen in addition to stationary for record keeping. Funding is needed to cover instructor wages, equipment, space rental and administrative functions related with offering the workshops.
Volunteering is vital to the operation of the Stress-Free Community Program. The program needs two types of volunteers:
- Workshop Leaders: To give workshops in different neighbourhoods, and
- Community Leaders: To raise awareness in various neighbourhoods in need of stress management for health, wellness, learning ability, and thoughtful behaviour.
Our organization will provide the necessary training to the volunteers and paid instructors. Fellow feeling, empathy, willingness to help and aptitude for community development are the only requirements to qualify. We will also provide the necessary education to community leaders needed for raising awareness. Volunteers for community awareness will require skill in effective communications using the written word, spoken word, and audio-visual media.
