Together, we strengthen our region’s not-for-profit sector by engaging a local community of active donors.
Social Venture Partners
Social Venture Partners (SVP) Waterloo Region is a granting foundation that invests differently – we do more than just writing a cheque. Through our model of engaged philanthropy, our partners donate their time, business expertise and network connections to local charities to help build their capacity and further their impact in our community.
Through our experiential learning series and hands-on involvement with the charities we support, our donors learn more about the not-for-profit sector, its needs, and how to have a bigger impact with their giving.
Our SVP Teens program is a free leadership and community-development program for youth aged 13-19. The program offers local teenagers insight into social issues facing out community, fundraising skills and grant-making experience.
By donating our time, talent and connections, we double the return on investment in the charities we support.
We do due diligence to ensure that we are supporting organizations that are poised for growth and have the leadership and sustainability to take their work to the next level.
Take SHORE Centre, for example.
In 2015, Planned Parenthood Waterloo Region knew it was not providing sexual health education and resources to as many people as it could. On a regular basis, its staff would encounter potential clients who weren’t accessing their services because of perceptions and stigma around their name.
When they successfully applied to be a SVP Waterloo Region Investee, they received unrestricted funding for three years, and the hands-on expertise of the business leaders, lawyers, marketers, and human resource experts in our partnership.
Because of that they were able to re-brand themselves as Sexual Health Options Resource and Education (SHORE) Centre. Today, they have increased their counselling clientele by 40% and increased their student education from 4,800 a year to 10,000.
The impact of our partners’ donations – of their financial contributions, time and talent – is evident through the changes and growth experienced by the charities we support.
SVP Waterloo partners (individuals or families) make a personally meaningful, tax deductible contribution of at least $5,000. Donations are pooled to fund local charities SVP supports, SVP programming and to grow our network.
We invite businesses and employers to sponsor partnerships and/or community and educational programming.
Waterloo Region youth interested in our SVP Teens may join at the beginning of the school year.
