Move More (Physical Activity and Mobility)
Move More is designed for older adults who are currently the most sedentary segment of the population. The program is unconventional in that it promotes activity, in any form, throughout the day. For example, gardening, short walks, or folding laundry. Unlike traditional programs that focus on planned “exercise” or exercise classes, Move More helps break down barriers to get older adults moving. We know that sitting for most of the day impacts our health, but moving more, in any way, can counteract those negative effects.
Move More has already inspired older adults to:
- Start a dance party
- Sport t-shirts saying “I’m a Sit Disturber”
- Collectively walk 8 million steps, which is the distance across Canada and back

“It certainly helps everybody. It boosts that energy, gets them into a better mood, and gets that cloud or fog away from their thinking process. They’re thinking more positively and if they can do something like that for two minutes or five minutes a couple times a day, we never fully know the internal advantages of that in their life, but it sure makes them happy.”
Move More was developed with seed funding from The Cowan Foundation. Their generous gift supported the development, pilot, and initial spread of the Move More program. Move More has already touched over 1,000 older adults.
