Green Light Arts is a theatre company in Waterloo Region. We produce bold, contemporary, exciting, thought-provoking theatre. We run empowering arts education programming and outreach initiatives aimed at meaningful community exchange. We believe that theatre is the start of a conversation that can lead to positive social change within our community about global issues. We believe that nurturing collaboration, enhancing confidence and emboldening creativity in people makes the world a better place and we use theatre to do it.
In February 2017 Green Light Arts will commence The Neighbourhood Project, a free 20-week pilot theatre program exploring how theatre builds community. Meeting weekly, we will work with up to 20 youth (14-18 years) from Kingsdale neighbourhood of Kitchener, Ontario. We will provide them with theatre training, specialty workshops and guidance in creating an original 30 minute piece of theatre about their neighbourhood to perform in June 2017. Beyond this pilot project, we hope to showcase this original piece in other neighbourhoods and cultural events to further nurture community exchange and allow people to get to know Kingsdale neighbourhood in a unique way.
We will give each participant an honorarium of $150 at the end of the program to thank them as authors of an original piece of theatre. For the youth in Kingsdale, it is not enough that we are providing free training, we also want to show these young people that their creative work is valued and that their commitment is appreciated. Additionally, participants will be given complimentary tickets to Green Light Arts’ 2016-17 season productions.
Help us fund The Neighbourhood Project. Your donations will help pay for workshop instructors, supplies, production materials, and honorariums for youth participants. Help us #greenlightthearts for youth in Kingsdale neighbourhood.
