WALKING WITH YOU: Trauma Counselling for Refugees

The trauma a refugee—individuals, parents, children and youth—may experience in their country of origin is compounded by a journey of displacement and separation on their way to a new homeland. The transitional experiences of living in a refugee camp, separation from others, exhaustion and fear of the unknown adds to the challenges. After arriving in a new country and community, settlement concerns can add further stress and challenges: accessing housing, health worries, worries about people left behind, discrimination, language barriers, and/or limited income. Research shows that enduring trauma, in addition to migration and settlement stressors, can lead to the development of escalating health concerns.

The cost of seeking support for mental health should not be a barrier to getting help and support. The Trauma Counselling for Refugees Fund will ensure those seeking therapeutic trauma and post-traumatic stress counselling will be able to access it. Counselling can offer a safe space where people are accepted to share their story and experiences, and start to identify the impact of the traumatic experiences in their lives. Counselling honours their strength and resilience, and, by using various therapeutic approaches, can alleviate or lessen the effects of trauma, including anxiety, depression, isolation, and sensitively work through the sadness, grief, and horror they may carry.

Giving Opportunity

The impacts of unresolved trauma can be devastating to an individual and their family. They look for help for themselves or a loved one, but may not be able to access it due to finances and/or a lack of coverage. At the Delton Glebe Counselling Centre, we have professional therapeutic counsellors, and art and play therapists. We are committed to providing our services at an affordable cost. Donating to our Trauma Counselling for Refugees fund will help us to ensure we do not turn people away because they may lack the ability to pay. Clients will be referred from local refugee serving organizations including our founding partner, Muslim Social Services. In addition, we offer the Empowering Muslim Women group as well as supplies, refreshments, honorariums and space costs. Donations are extremely appreciated, and can be made online.
